This is ME and What You See is Beautiful!

This amazing video of the Oscar-nominated song is from Atlantic Records Soundtrack of the movie The Greatest Showman.

Recently I have gotten to the place where I don’t like the person I see in the mirror.  There was a time I sincerely looked at ME and loved ME mind, body, and spirit.

But the world has taught us that being overweight is ugly.  We are supposed to feel shame for letting ourselves get to where we are.  But who is perfect, and if we wait till we are perfect to be lovable then no one would be worthy.

I love this video because it reminds me of something I talked about with a dear friend at dinner.  I am more than my body.  I am a piece of The Divine!  When I was born into this body, I incarnated as a perfect being of Divine Love.  I am still that person.  That is the real ME; life is about remembering who you are.

I want to be a motivational speaker and best selling author.  But I’ve played small because of the shame and embarrasement of where I am physically.  I had lost so much weight and was getting healthy and then gained it all back.  I’ve been ashamed to be where I’m at and did not want to “be seen.”  So I’ve been in hiding.  Not anymore!  This is ME and what you see is BEAUTIFUL!!!

One of my favorite speakers and authors and general shero is Lisa Nichols.  She was in the movie, The Secret and she was a beautiful full figured curvy woman.  She has lost a lot of weight, and she looks fabulous, you can tell she spends a lot of time loving herself and exercising, she is exceptionally cut.  But she was always beautiful.  She said in a YouTube video from Awesome-Fest that if she waited till she was thin to get out there speaking “Lisa Nichols would be the secret.”  It was like something inside me opened up when I heard that.

So no more hiding.  This is ME.

There will always be haters, people who need to shame others and criticize.  People who judge and hurl their cruel words at you, like in the video.  They are just words.  I am a warrior, and if the lashes of others verbal assaults hit me I will proudly wear them as my battle scars and say, “This is ME and what you see is beautiful!”

These are some exercises I pieced together from my teachers/mentors/sheros of self-love, these women have paved the way for the world see “self-love” not as bad thing to criticize and judge but rather as a goal to strive to achieve.

So this post is dedicated to Louise Hay and her mirror work that changed so many lives including mine.  She was a warrior and will be missed; her loss will be felt.

I also thank Christine Arylo the self-love catalyst, another mighty warrior.  I have all her books, and she taught me that falling Madly in Love with Me, one of her fabulous books, is my life’s work, so I can help others do the same.

Thank you, Teal Swan, another warrior for love who showed me that no matter where you are starting even if you have a 0 baseline for self-love it is still possible to overcome it.  Her Youtube videos and books on her journey are life-altering.

Thank you, Lisa Nichols who challenges me to action, she always leaves you wanting to say, “Yes Yes” this warriors personal battle cry.

Of course, I added my spin to the excercise too.

Now if you’ve followed my blog you know I always give a call to action, some homework, a challenge.  So here it is.

My Challenge:

Yes, it’s mirror work time.  Yeah!

Try these exercises for the first 5-10 minutes of your morning for 30 days. You will have a shift. Now because I know that mirror work, especially if you have self-love issues will make you feel uncomfortable and there will be resistance, I challenge you to, “Do it anyway!” You will see a shift if you persist.

This section is the part that I added to help with the resistance.

Get up in the morning and look into your eyes.  Remember that you are not your body or your circumstances.  You are the Divine being who was incarnated into this temporary form.  Even this form has changed over time, you have lived many incarnations in this lifecycle.  You were an infant, a toddler, a child, a teenager, and an adult but, even though your form has changed over time the essence of who you are has always been the pure Divine Love being that entered this form as a baby. (I heard this from Wayne Dyer in an interview with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday)

You are not your body; you are not your mistakes, you are not your failures, you are not what people say about you, you are a piece of the divine.  They say the eyes are the seat of the soul where you can look deeply into and see you, the real you.  Have an intimate moment with yourself.  Intimacy is basically “Into-me-see, we all seek intimacy but do we ever have intimacy with ourselves.

Life is about remembering who we are. A drop of water in the ocean of The Divine.  We are all energy, and a piece of The Divine, there is nowhere that The Divine is not.  That love energy is in every cell of your body and your DNA, there is nowhere where it stops, and you begin.

So as you gaze deep into your eyes and do this exercise, really look, without judgment, without labels and remember who is living inside there.  Don’t give into the resistance; it will get easier.  Stick to it and keep the promise you made to yourself.  I’m doing it right along-side of you.

As you look into your eyes, do the following things.

This affirmation comes from Louise Hay. Put your hand over your heart and say “I love you exactly the way you are.”  Say it three to seven times.  There is something magical about repeating it.

Then do Lisa Nichols exercise.  You can find her talk about it on YouTube. It was also at Awesome-Fest, I will make it to one.  Say to yourself, Maria Elena (Your name here) I’m proud of you for… say seven things, Maria Elena (Your name here) I forgive you for… say seven things, Maria Elena (Your name here) I commit to you… say seven things.  You can put your hand over your heart; it helps to connect with your higher self, the true you.  You may find yourself forgiving yourself for the same things over and over, but eventually, you will see a shift, and that thing won’t come up for you.  My addition is if you can journal what you said and felt after.

I’m attaching the self-love promises from Christine Arylo which I learned from her Self-Love program; I highly recommend signing up or reading her books, wow.  I have these images on every mirror in my house and over my desk. Put them on your mirror, and say them at least three times in the morning or night with your hand over your heart while looking into your eyes.

This is something you can do in addition to the mirror work if you want to take it to the next level.

Ask yourself these questions.

Teal Swan in her book, Shadow Before Dawn said she didn’t know what self-love was she was so broken she could not even comprehend it. So she lived for one year by one question; she used it to make every decision, she asked herself, “What would someone who loves themselves do?”

Again I added these questions because sometimes we know how to help others but don’t know how to help ourselves: What would I tell my best friend?  What do I need right now?

I admit I love inspirational posts on FB, Twitter and Pinterest.  There are days I get carried away sharing stuff that is motivational or inspiring.  This is one of those posts.  I like the simplicity of the list of how to build your confidence.

Self-confidence is important; we need to have confidence to create an empowered life.  Self-esteem is actually different than self-confidence.  It is recognizing you have value and that you have deep worth, to hold yourself in high honor.  Confidence means you believe you can do things.  Esteem means you are worth loving even if you do nothing.  It is recognizing who you really are, a masterpiece.

We all came into these bodies as pure divine love, somehow the muck of our experiences in this body and what others have told us, makes us forget that.  We are amazing works of art, masterpieces.

As I am writing this I was thinking of the word masterpiece.  We were pieced together by the Master creator.  Every thread of character carefully chosen, every fiber of temperament mindfully selected.  As each feature of our body was deliberately chiseled by the Master’s hand, we were created perfectly.

Who you are is worthy of being valued and esteemed (held in high honor).  So it is great to have self-confidence but even more amazing is truly having self-esteem.  When you accept yourself and celebrate yourself then you are invincible.

My Challenge:  Write down three things about yourself that are part of who you are and not what you do that are amazing works of the master, and thank him for creating you so wonderfully.  Keep writing the list is endless.

My dream is to create a world of love and tolerance, where people make responsible choices from a place of personal power.  No one embodied, lived and died for that dream greater than the hero we honor today, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the man with a powerful dream.

Nothing I can say will do justice to his indelible spirit and passionate purpose.  Today on Facebook and Twitter I found myself sharing countless quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. what profound wisdom and statements he spoke, the eloquence of which I can only aspire.

As you go through your busy day stop and remember what a different world this would be if it were not for men such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  And ask yourself what are you doing for others?

When I look at this picture I think of surrender.  Her arms open waiting expectantly for her heart’s desire.  When we surrender it is not tight held fists raging against the sky, instead it is open arms waiting for our miracle to happen.

I think that is when we love God the most and when he feels it the most.  When we stop and recognize that within us is all that we need, we become empowered.  We are connected to the source of all creation and when we love and trust the Divine Love that created all things, we are free.  Love always trusts.

The greatest act of love is faith.  Stop looking at the surface temporary things and look at the eternal things within your reach, right inside of you.  When you surrender with open arms, wait expectantly for miracles to occur.

My Challenge: Find something in your life you want to get rid of and choose to surrender.  Maybe it is something that is not working and you need to let it go.  Open wide your arms (literally) and say, I surrender to a power greater than I.  Wait expectantly for your miracle.

It saddens me to say good-bye to one of my hero’s.  Even though I know he would not trade where he is now for anything, he was looking forward to his next chapter, the world has lost a powerful teacher, writer and poet and a moment to remember his wisdom and humor seems in order.

When I created my “mind movie” of my dreams and vision of my life, meeting Dr. Wayne Dyer was a big part of my dream.  I realize that I will not have that chance in this life again.

I had planned on going to the Writer’s Conference in Maui this year to get a chance to learn from him face to face but I did not make every effort and step out of my comfort zone to do whatever it took to make it happen.

I realize now how important it is to go for you dreams because you don’t know if you will get tomorrow.


I have been writing a lot lately about living your purpose and going for it.  It really hit home when I realized that I missed my chance to meet Dr. Wayne Dyer and will never get it again.

One of the things that I loved most about Dr. Wayne Dyer is his humor and honesty.

I was really in a bad place after a series of operations and was just tired of being sick and in pain.  One of the things that really pulled me out of my depression was listening to his Essence of Being in Balance recording by, Dr. Wayne Dyer.

“With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose.”

It reminded me, as he always did, that I am a piece of the Divine and that I can change my life by changing my thinking and connecting with the Divine.  He always reminded me that it was my choice.  I choose love.

So many times when I get stuck I listen to him and I remember that the answer is within me and I reconnect with the Source of power.  He always helps me to plug into the Divine.

In the movie, The Shift, Dr. Wayne Dyer got up before dawn and put his feet on the ground and said, “Thank You”.  He often spoke about this, that the first thing in the morning it was important to say, “Thank You”.  I even created a wall of inspiration that I face when I wake up with the words, Thank You, in big letters to remind me to be grateful for another day.  I learned that from him.

I always teach that love is the only real power to change the world and Dr. Wayne Dyer was love.  His teachings called people to live lives of love and peace.  His message will live on and continue to create the shift he imagined.

Dr. Wayne Dyer also often spoke of our power to choose.  I find as I share that with people there is always someone who says they can’t choose, and decide to stay a victim.  I was listening to him today and he talked about the un-reflecting masses.  When we live unaware of our power we become victims but we always have the power to change.

My Challenge: Life is short you don’t know how long you have.  Don’t put off your dreams do what it takes.  Anything is possible if a man who spent most of his youth in foster care and came from nothing could create such abundance than none of us have an excuse not to live powerful purpose filled lives.  Make yours count.  Live your dreams and go for it.

As energetic beings we all influence the world around us in a powerful way.  Love not only has a psychological effect but the impact is physical as well.  The heart is associated with love but in reality it is more than a sentimental notion.  The electromagnetic field generated by the heart has a physical and emotional effect on those around us and that effect is influenced by the emotions we are choosing to experience and put out there.

You might be surprised to find out that your heart emits electromagnetic fields that change according to your emotions and can be measured up to several feet away from the body.  In fact, The Institute of HeartMath found that the magnetic field generated by the heart is five times stronger than that of the brain.

Positive emotions such as love for others and self-love create physiological benefits in our bodies such as boosting our immune system and feeling positive emotions such as love creates an electromagnetic field that positively impacts those around us as well.

The heart is the master command center for love; it is the first organ to develop in a fetus and the last to shut down when we die.  While most people think the brain is most important, the heart actually influences the brain more than the brain influences the heart.  Research shows that the heart sends more neurological information to the brain than the brain does to the heart.

When we are in a positive emotional state, our hearts beat in a coherent rhythm that causes all the other systems in the body including the brain, the immune system, and our hormones to work together efficiently and harmoniously.  We can generate heart rhythm coherence simply by thinking about love and appreciation: we actually feel love and our heart rhythms sync up.

Heart rhythm coherence increases access to the hearts intuitive guidance.  When and individual is in a state of heart rhythm coherence they radiate a more coherent energy field which can benefit people, animals and the environment.

The Institute of HeartMath has conducted extensive research into human emotions and the results show that positive emotions such as compassion, care and love positively influence a person’s physical well-being.

When we are able to embrace the compassion we would extend to others, we create an energy field that elevates our personal vibration. Like that vibrant person with the magnetic personality that seems to draw people effortlessly, this higher state fosters positive emotions and more intelligent intuitive choices and beneficial outcomes.  It also radiates out effecting the energy of those around us in a positive way.

According to the study, The Physiological and Psychological Effects of Compassion and Anger published in 1995 in the Journal of Advancement in Medicine, experiencing positive loving emotions increase Salivary immunoglobulin A (S-IgA). S-IgA is an important antibody which provides the first line of defense against pathogens in the upper respiratory tract, the gastrointestinal system and the urinary tract. Higher levels of S-IgA are associated with decreased incidence of disease and susceptibility to upper respiratory infections.  Love actually works to keep us healthy physically and emotionally.

We can learn to increase our heart rhythm coherence.  The Institute for HeartMath has many exercises we can do to change our vibration and enable us to change what we are emitting out into the world, love saves lives.  Check out their website:

Here is one of their exercises used to generate heart rhythm coherence.

HeartMath Quick Coherence Exercise

Make yourself comfortable, eyes open or closed.  Release all tension from your body.

1. Heart Focus – Focus your attention on the area of the heart and the heart space.  Move from head to heart you can imagine elevator.

2. Heart Focused Breathing – Breathe deeply and slowly, imagine the breaths are coming in and out the heart and heart space.

3. Heart Feeling – Maintain focus on heart, continue heart breathing, generate heart feeling such as love, joy or gratitude.  Recall a time when you felt love and relive the moment.

Shift back your awareness to the room.  Open your eyes if you shut them.  Recall the feeling you are experiencing and try to hold onto as long as can. By feeling heart centered emotions while breathing from the heart you regulate emotions and stop the drain that emotionally charged situations can have on your system.

My Challenge:  Make it a practice to set aside a few minutes a couple of times a day to increase your heart rhythm coherence doing exercises like the one above and go out and radiate the vibration of love, only love will change the world.
